A word about cotton lawn... Since the Middle Ages, fine, tightly woven plain-weave fabrics have been in high demand. Named after the French city of "Laon", cotton lawn is manufactured with fine yarns to create a high-thread-count, lightweight fabric with a silky, smooth feel. Originally manufactured from linen, lawn is now made with silky long-staple combed and carded cotton. The most common fabrics of this kind are cambric, batiste and lawn. Tana lawn, from Liberty of London, is named for Lake Tana in Ethiopia, where the cotton for this fabric was originally sources.
The finish used on lawn fabrics can vary, generally resulting a crisp, crease-resistant finish, with nice balance between body and drape. Lawns are generally opaque and depending on the color and print, they can be somewhat sheer, particularly before washing.
Because lawn in so tightly woven, we recommend using a thin, sharp machine needle (we like microtex 60/8 or 70/10). A thinner, thread all cotton thread, such as our 50 weight Scan-fil organic cotton will produce a nicer stitch quality worthy of this lovely. fabric.
